The Threshold

Creative Director/Photographer/Retoucher: Fernando Cevallos

1. What significant life experiences or events have influenced and shaped your artistic vision?

Since I was little, artistic education and conversations with my teachers taught me to see art in an intimate, emotional way, not just technically. Visiting museums and exhibitions also shaped my sensibility; standing before works filled with symbolism, I discovered that art is a bridge between imagination, memory, and identity. That personal search is now the foundation of my artistic vision.

2. Collaboration often sparks fresh creativity. Can you share an example of a collaboration that led to an unexpected and exciting artistic outcome?

For this editorial, building the right team was everything. The stylist instantly clicked with the narrative, which opened doors to emerging designers whose pieces felt surreal and modern at the same time. The model had her own emotional relationship to the artists who inspired the project, and that connection translated into a deeper, more intuitive performance. Meanwhile, the hairstylist understood the vision almost instinctively, crafting a look that completed the world we were building.

It reminded me that when the right people come together, creativity expands beyond what you initially imagine.

3. Walk us through a specific project that challenged your creative boundaries. How did you approach it, and what did you learn from the experience?

The biggest challenge was translating the pictorial and surreal language of Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo into an editorial. I experimented with lighting, textures, symbolism, and art direction filled with narrative intent. It wasn’t a linear process, there were doubts, tests, and constant adjustments. However, I learned to trust the creative process, embrace trial and error, and most importantly, to delegate and trust my team. That journey strengthened my visual identity and my ability to build worlds within fashion imagery.

4. In the ever-evolving art world, what do you believe sets your work apart and makes it unique or groundbreaking?

I think what distinguishes my work is my commitment to creating images that don’t just work visually, but emotionally. My photography draws from artistic, cultural, and narrative references, translating them into an editorial language. I don’t seek only “beauty,” but atmosphere, meaning, and sensitivity. For me, fashion is a path to explore identity, vulnerability, and inner worlds. I believe in images that invite imagination, feeling, and reflection, more than just looking.

5. As you reflect on your journey, are there any specific goals or milestones you've set for your artistic career in the coming years?

One of my goals is to continue developing an honest and solid visual language, deepening my technical skills and expanding my narrative capacity. I want to collaborate with artists and creatives who share a similar conceptual sensitivity, participate in publications, and eventually exhibit my work. I hope my work remains a space for exploration, evolution, and personal expression. Above all, staying true to my vision and creating from a genuine place is what matters most to me.

  • "The Threshold" is a photographic exploration of the moment the unknown becomes visible. This series delves into the tension of beginnings: a body sensing, a light opening invisible portals, and an atmosphere that suggests the magical without fully revealing it. The images act as symbols of initiation, where gesture and styling transform into subtle yet mysterious rituals. It's a work that captures the vertigo of taking the first step into the hidden, embracing uncertainty as fertile ground.

Taking inspiration from the dream-filled portals in the work of Leonora Carrington and the mystical sensibility of Remedios Varo, they were a fundamental part of creating this series. From them, I took the idea that the extraordinary is hidden in the corners of the everyday, in those moments where the real and the magical intertwine.
