The Last Commute

Photographer: Mateo Wilches

  • All of the elements in the photos are in camera. For this series, I wanted to experiment with the limits of what makes a backdrop, a backdrop. I also wanted to focus on creating all of the main elements in camera. To accomplish this, I printed a backdrop of the Dolomite Mountains in Northern Italy shot by my good friend, Samuel Jake. Olivia and I used memory foams cubes and fabric to create a rugged terrain. Paul begins his journey as a burnt out office worker, dreaming of something more fulfilling. His daydreams take him on a journey through the expansive mountains, in the company of the crow he saved some nuts to feed each day on the way to work. As he ascends, he finds himself at home in his environment, with the backdrop eventually falling away. Rather than acting as his environment, it becomes his safety blanket, draped over his shoulders. He experiences his own kind of enlightenment. This trek to the highest peak will be his final commute.
