Flawless Complexion Secrets

Model/Makeup Artist: Oleksandra Leiko

1)  What significant life experiences or events have influenced and shaped your artistic vision?

My artistic vision was born on the dance floor. As a child, I was a ballroom dancer, and stage makeup was a requirement for every performance. From the age of eleven, I was doing my own makeup for competitions, learning how to create impact through color, texture, and expression. That early experience taught me how powerful makeup could be in transforming not just appearance, but emotion and confidence. Later, entering the professional world at seventeen, working backstage at fashion weeks, and with celebrities, I realized how much storytelling lives in beauty. Each face became a canvas, and my mission has been to elevate natural features while conveying mood and identity.

2)  Collaboration often sparks fresh creativity. Can you share an example of a collaboration that led to an unexpected and exciting artistic outcome?

One of the most unexpected outcomes came during a show at New York Fashion Week. The designer wanted to combine classic clothing with bold, edgy makeup. Together, we created graphic eyeliner on bare, glowing skin. It was a minimalist yet striking look that felt risky at first but turned out to be a perfect contrast to the collection's structure. The final result received great feedback and was featured in press coverage. This experience taught me how powerful collaboration can be when both sides are open to bold ideas.

3)  Walk us through a specific project that challenged your creative boundaries. How did you approach it, and what did you learn from the experience?

One of the most intense moments in my career was backstage at Fashion Week. I had only 10 minutes to complete a full makeup look for one of the models before she had to walk the runway. It was chaotic, with dozens of models, stylists, and last-minute changes. I had to work quickly while keeping the quality flawless, analyzing the skin, applying base, enhancing the eyes, and ensuring the entire look matched the designer's vision. That challenge taught me how to stay calm under pressure and trust my skills. Now I can handle high-stress environments with precision and creativity.

4)  In the ever-evolving art world, what do you believe sets your work apart and makes it unique or groundbreaking?

What sets my work apart is the balance between technical skill and emotional intuition. I don't just follow trends, I listen to people, understand their energy, and create a look that fits the moment. Whether I'm working on a fashion show, photoshoot, or private client, I adapt the makeup to the person, the lighting, and the story we want to tell. My work is about transformation that feels authentic.

5)  As you reflect on your journey, are there any specific goals or milestones you've set for your artistic career in the coming years?

In the coming years, I aim to grow as an educator and author. I recently completed my first book on makeup, where I share practical techniques and personal insights. I want to teach internationally and help aspiring artists develop their unique styles. Another milestone is launching my own beauty product line, tailored for professionals who work with diverse skin tones and under various lighting conditions. My journey is just beginning, and I'm excited to make it meaningful and inspiring.

  • A flawless complexion is the foundation of any makeup look. It makes the face appear fresh, well-groomed, and luxurious. Over the years of working with various clients-from runway models to celebrities—| have developed my own signature technique for applying foundation that ensures a natural, long-lasting, and undetectable finish. In this article, I will share the key principles that help me create "perfect skin" without the dreaded mask effect.

    1. Skin Preparation - 50% of Success

The secret to a flawless complexion starts with well-prepared skin. Many people make the mistake of trying to "cover up" imperfections with thick layers of foundation, but this only accentuates flaws. I always follow the rule: the better the skin is prepped, the less product is needed.

    My Skin Preparation Routine:

    1. Deep Hydration - Foundation applies beautifully only on well-moisturized skin. Before makeup, I always use a lightweight hydrating serum and a moisturizer suited to the skin type.

2.Texture Smoothing - If the skin is prone to dryness or flaking, I apply a thin layer of a hydrating primer or a soft pore-filling base.

3.Sebum Control - For oily skin, l use a mattifying primer only on problem areas (the T-zone) to avoid overloading the skin.

    2. Choosing the Right Foundation Texture

Selecting the right foundation is crucial. It's not just about the shade but also the texture. I follow the "layering principle", applying foundation in multiple steps to achieve a light and natural look.

How to Choose Foundation Using My Signature Method:

    * Always test the shade on the jawline - It should blend seamlessly with the skin and match the neck.

    * Lightweight fluids for a natural effect - These create a "second skin" effect and are perfect for everyday makeup.

    * Medium coverage - the universal choice

    * If I need to neutralize redness without overloading the face, l use a medium-coverage foundation.

    * Full coverage - only for photography and videography - If applied with a brush, the coverage will be denser; if applied with a sponge, it will be lighter and more natural.

    3. My Exclusive Application Method: The Power of a Sponge

In my work, I prefer applying foundation with a damp sponge. This tool allows for the most natural and lightweight coverage without streaks or heaviness.

How to Apply Foundation with a Sponge Correctly:

The sponge should always be damp -

Before use, I soak it well and squeeze out excess water. This ensures the product applies in a thin layer without being absorbed into the sponge.

    * Foundation can be built up - I apply it in thin layers, starting with a sheer base and adding more product only where needed. This creates a "living skin" effect without excess heaviness.

    * Use dabbing motions - never swipe!

    * I never smear foundation; instead, use light tapping motions to press it into the skin, ensuring longevity.

    * Adjusting coverage density by zone - In the center of the face (where most imperfections tend to be), l apply a sir' denser layer, while on the edges, I blend the vioduct as thinly possible for a seamless transition.

    4. Seamless Foundation: The Secret to a Natural Look

One of the biggest mistakes is applying foundation only to the face. This often results in a noticeable contrast between the face, neck, and décolleté. I always use my "seamless blending technique":

1.Gently blend foundation into the neck and ears - This prevents the "mask effect."

    2. Varying coverage in different areas - The center of the face usually needs more coverage, while the edges should have the least product, creating a natural shadow effect.

    5. Setting the Foundation: How to Make It Last All Day

Even if the foundation is applied perfectly, without proper setting, it can quickly "slip off."

How I Set Foundation for Long-Lasting Wear:

    * Minimal powder - only in necessary areas

I never powder the entire face. Instead, I set specific zones: under the eyes, the T-zone, and any areas where foundation tends to fade faster.

    * A light mist of setting spray - To enhance

longevity, use a setting spray that adds a natural glow to the skin.

    * Blotting instead of powdering throughout the day - If the skin gets oily, l use blotting papers rather than layering more powder to keep the makeup looking fresh.

    Conclusion

Creating the perfect complexion is an art that requires attention to detail and a deep understanding of skin characteristics. My signature technique is based on proper skin preparation, choosing the right textures, and using a damp sponge for application.

The ultimate secret is not to mask imperfections but to enhance the skin's natural beauty. This approach ensures that makeup looks luxurious and professional in any setting-whether for a photoshoot, a runway, or everyday life.
